Prakriti -- Ethers, Gunas -- Mahat

Prakriti -- 7 ethers -- total possibilities -- organized in a certain way.

Gunas -- substantial.

Ethers -- qualitative -- formal -- have three levels of reference.

1) spirit 2) mercurial - sulfur 3) salt - gross bodily

Pure matter (unintelligible) → organization - Mahat

What came in to account for this change? (ethers and gunas)

Substance and form:

Body - Material

Mind - Form

Manly Palmer Hall -- "Elements are the vehicles of the powers which emanate from the stars… Elements are reservoirs of conditioned vitality and each element confers some moral or intellectual force upon the organisms of which it is a component part." Ethers are vehicles of the gunas?

Where does the experience come in if it is not Prakriti or Purusha (the Soul or I) --

Samkhya dissolves that subject and its psychology into cosmic principle(s), to a level where it -- the I -- does not exist.

Fire = soul

Water = generation

Earth = individual form

Air = intellect

Degrees = Buddhi = guiding intelligence -- form.

Planets = will, Ahamkara, which manifests degree's meaning -- activity, power.

Tanmatras = substance -- matter -- sign is a secondary determination of subtle, unific matter.

Air -- [symbolized by triangle] -- Mercury in Gemini -- thinking -- dispersive, expansive, anti-individual, universalizing

Earth -- [symbolized by square] -- Mercury in Taurus -- thinking -- concrete, individual

Water -- [symbolized by half-Moon] -- Mercury --

Fire -- [symbolized by circle] -- Mercury in Aries -- thinking -- episodic, anti-individual, moody

Within one element -- notion of where the center is is different.

Taurus -- subjectivity is in terms of will -- creative -- definition of ego is in terms of experience.

Virgo -- feeling - relation -- definition of ego is analytic.

Capricorn -- definition of ego is in terms of control.

Aries -- RF [rajasic fire]

Leo -- TF [tamasic fire]

Sagittarius -- SF [sattvic fire]
