Every individual is equipped with the machinery to produce the world-image he lives in through symbolific activity.

In the very activity of the mind emotion is involved.

Attempt at an integrative comprehensive theory of emotion combining different theoretical levels (psychical, social, physiological, etc).

Representation of object (symbolism, pictorialization) and not object itself produces emotion.

When manas attempts to grasp intelligible object it does through symbols. Emotion is the symbolization of the objective psyche.

Inside person symbols are lived out as emotions.

Outside person emotions are perceived as symbols.

Emotion can be controlled by the manipulation of conscious images.

1) Material -- matter is some kind of energy. Emotion is constituted of invisible forces = nucleated centers, complexes, dynamic units. Emotion is the conscious or psychic form of universal energy. Energy appears to consciousness in terms of emotion but is unknowable in itself. The field of the body is the stuff of emotion. Body situation is the locus of emotion -- the more body, the more emotion.

Formal cause of emotion is soul (Plotinus -- formal cause is logos spermaticos = animate). [Note: Plotinus, Enneads, VI.7.4.]

The storehouse of universal energy is the alaya-vijnana -- 10th house.

It produces the universal and underlies the individual mind. It is the stuff (material cause) of emotions.

Formal = qualitative, laksana -- mark, distinguishing character.

Emotion is a total pattern of the soul (it involves all of you).

In emotion all the elements of the personality are fused into a unified total reaction or pattern.

The subject-object dichotomy cuts off the emotion and you do not experience it directly -- your neurotic patterns obscure it. The experience of the undifferentiated aesthetic continuum is that of emotion.
