Had a real sense of lyric drama (the words expressing the music -- music and words have to share something in common) -- words must be grounded in the music.

Opera: Manon Lescaut

1) 7/17/1889 -- idea. Uranus sextile Venus, Uranus square Mercury, Jupiter conjunct Sun, Mars opposite Mercury, Sun conjunct Midheaven. Uranus had an insight into the scope and range of feeling and the illogicality they operate with. (All the different conceptions of morality on feeling in each character in Manon Lescaut) = Uranus sextile Venus. Uranus square Mercury = brought out his own thinking processes -- took charge of libretto. (Blending of lyric and music) -- Mercury was perfectionist. Jupiter conjunct Sun = Sun is his teacher -- his destiny moved forward -- Jupiter = instinct -- saw the instinctual compulsions through his imagination -- saw the power of the instincts = Manon's [looks like: attractions] to wealth and love -- two souls (4 degree). 8th house Jupiter -- from his past, conjunct Sun -- a decision was made with Jupiter conjunct Sun to express his own feelings -- he was given a material within which to express his feelings.

2) 1/5/1890 -- interrupted for Buddha idea -- Neptune conjunct Uranus, Saturn conjunct Tail, Jupiter conjunct Mercury.

3) March 1890 -- began orchestration -- Head conjunct Sun, Neptune conjunct Uranus, Saturn trine Sun, Jupiter square Neptune.

4) January 1891 -- finished only with Act 1 -- Tail conjunct Jupiter, Saturn square Venus, Saturn trine Mercury.

October 1892 -- finished -- Tail conjunct Pluto, Neptune sextile Saturn, Uranus opposite Pluto, Jupiter trine Venus, Jupiter square Mercury.

Head [Pisces 2, "Almost as if possessed with man's intelligence a tiny squirrel re-mains watchful on a limb hidden from the hunters."] conjunct Sun [Sagittarius 30, "A picture of regal and sacerdotal pomp and glory reveals itself; the Pope is holding audience in his palace."] -- little squirrel -- innate prescience = an insight into his own authority -- self-reliance to trust the purpose of the Sun.

Neptune conjunct Uranus -- Neptune obscured the Uranus -- his feelings always interfere what his higher self is thinking. Uranus = the higher self, knower in him, is obscured. From then on his life was a mess in terms of intellectual development -- his destiny chose the development of feelings. From then on the thinking represented by Uranus was obscured. Neptune is loaded with feeling -- the feelings were personal. He brought the lower feelings up to consciousness. (Wagner brought the higher feelings down.) His music is at an intimate human level.

Saturn trine Sun --

Anthony: "I was 20 when I heard Manon Lescaut and I found out I was a man." The opera has a strong impact.

Jupiter square Pluto -- the beginning of a contact with the primal energy (Pluto) -- a re-organization of his imaginal essence was going on to put him in contact with a deeper level of energy (Jupiter). The purpose was to make contact with the instincts.

Psychoanalysis is like in My Dinner with Andre [film, 1981, Louis Malle, director] -- they built a prison and are so infatuated with it they choose to live in it and think they are the guards.
