Libretto for Manon

Uranus sextile Venus -- (sharpening) clarific of his feelings--his own anima function and Uranus was revealing that to him. With the idea of Manon, he was defining his own feelings.

Uranus square Mercury -- [Note: Student has handwritten 'blocked' underneath "Uranus square Mercury".] Puccini was having difficulty thinking--that thinking function was blocked out. Mercury is his intellectual function, his trying to understand; and it is hard for him to write. First his Mercury function was untapped--later, after he develops his function, he becomes discerning. Mercury = mature, but formerly repressed but gets released. [Capricorn 17, "A mature but long repressed young woman is bathing surreptitiously in the nude and finding a release in spirit."]

Planets in Aquarius get defined--and one sees what loka he's in, e.g., Puccini was not a writer of church music.

Mars conjunct Head -- natally = the libidinal energy knew where it was going and what it wanted to get done.

Sun sextile Mars = the sextile helps define the libidinal energy. There is a continuity in his operas. Even though Turandot is a big jump.

Puccini's Mars (shadow) was going through a four-fold transformation.

Anthony: Did he love women or his feelings about women? Puccini's feelings about women was his shadow. Puccini's way of relating to women was through the shadow. Puccini was interested in women sexually, not in terms of feeling. This Mars put him in touch with something deeper within itself. [Aquarius 30, "A mystic moon-lit field near the site of a mystic and traditional Babylon has sprung into delicate white bloom."]

Neptune conjunct Uranus would reveal to Puccini what he would be able to do.

Puccini's Uranus degree symbol [Gemini 1, "A glass-bottomed boat drifts silently and easily over a constantly shifting panorama of marine wonders."] would see into the unconscious--with Neptune conjunct Uranus Puccini would recognize that he was a composer. He was 33 at this time.

Head (squirrel) [Pisces 2, "Almost as if possessed with man's intelligence a tiny squirrel remains watchful on a limb hidden from the hunters."] conjunct Sun (Pope) [Sagittarius 30, "A picture of regal and sacerdotal pomp and glory reveals itself; the Pope is holding audience in his palace."] = The innate knowledge of what he is going to do. Squirrel (Head) translation of the almost human intelligence into man's intelligence.

Head conjunct Mars -- a maniacal desire for women. The transformation of a libidinal desire. In his operas he idealized his women.

Pinkerton (in Boheme) was Puccini. With Saturn conjunct Sun there is a sense of responsibility. This was a damning self-condemning aspect.

Bert gives life summary.

Timothy (notes aspects): Sun Sagittarius sextile Mars Aquarius. This aspect is not convex to any other Chaldean planets until you get to Sun Q Mars? [Note: Not clear to typist what Sun Q Mars refers to.]

Sun sextile Mars is his closest aspect.

Sun is the unfolding of the life.

When he first heard Aida -- Timothy lists aspects.

Jupiter Gemini [Gemini 15, "Two Dutch children in their immaculate native costumes are studying their lessons together."] 8^th -- is where he got his inspiration for his operas.

Idea for the music:

1/5/1890 (opera on the Buddha): Neptune conjunct Uranus, Saturn conjunct Tail, Jupiter conjunct Mercury.

By January 1891 he's finished Act I. He had Tail conjunct Jupiter, Saturn square Venus trine Mercury.

For idea: Uranus sextile Venus square Mercury, Jupiter conjunct Sun, Mars opposite Mercury.
