Astrology; Horoscope-Emerson

Class 9/13/1982 Monday Astrology Seminar Emerson

[Note: Sabian degrees and interpretations are from Marc Edmund Jones, The Astrology of Concepts and The Sabian Symbols in Astrology.]

Tim reads Emerson's Sun degree from Jones' Sabian Symbols, and Jones' psychological interpretation. [Gemini 4, "A series of rooms in a hospitable house, opening one into the other, are decorated gaily with holly and mistletoe."]

Tim reads opposite degree and interpretation from Jones. [Sagittarius 4, "A little child is learning to walk; near are happy parents wise enough to refuse unnecessary assistance."]

Tim reads his prepared interpretation.

Linda reads her prepared interpretation.

Dickie questions the significance of the degree-opposite degree relationship.

Agreement to inquire.

Suggestions: Linda -- opposite degree as outward face, appearance to others. Relates Anthony's previous suggestion that a planet expresses itself in the opposite house in terms of circumstances of that house.

Tim -- relates that his studies do not support Anthony's assertion.

Dickie comment.

What are eighth house circumstances? Deaths; transcendence of cultural milieu; need to formulate in personal terms; native as cultural force.

Dickie adds that he views the second house in Emerson's chart as expression of Neptune's residence there rather than as opposite-degree appendage of Sun.

Second house matters? Body.

Tim -- second as power, practical orientation, physical skills, character

Linda -- physical ills, growth through transformations of the body

Tim -- personal circumstances in general

Emerson culled from others, indicating the relative unimportance of the second house in his chart.

Sun in eighth and Emerson's political activities

Further discussion of second house meaning.

Discussion returns to degree and opposite.

Tim introduces Bhattacharyya: polarization of empirical individual and his circumstances.

RG: Emerson's financial affairs (second house) were Neptunian rather than Solar; lack of the possessiveness characteristic of second house; unhesitating generosity, unusual sources of financial support.

Agreement to seek clarification by investigating a planet in a house where the opposite house is not occupied by a planet.

Peggy asks difference between chart as ego and Sun as ego.

Linda: Sun as Solar consciousness, projecting individual experience.

Tim: Other Chaldeans elaborate the primary imaginative activity of the Sun.

Dickie: Sun as I-thought.

Linda rereads Sun degree and opposite and sketches interpretations.

Inconclusive discussion.

Tim reads from Emerson's writings April 1826 -- an almost literal description of his Sun degree symbol. [Note: See Bliss Perry (Ed.), Ralph Waldo Emerson, The Heart of Emerson's Journals, p. 32.]

Anthony: Sun: life of individual as part of Dragon; Dragon as Sun's apparent circuit around the Earth, a serpentine movement, trace; Sun as light and life of the Dragon; each individual life is a participation in that whole, belongs to the Dragon; Dragon is traces of Sun projecting the primal image, therefore the Sun is the light and the life of the individual; the primal image is of the substance of the Sun; Emerson's Sun degree describes the interiority of his ego -- to his soul, the ego was completely accessible, and Emerson's appreciation was indicated by the quote Tim read.

Tim rereads above quote.

Anthony summarizes his remarks above, adds that this is a positive view of the ego as inward, rich, useful, developed, refined.

Tim reads Emerson's Moon degree and interpretation from Jones, and opposites. [Leo 5, "Overhanging a vast canyon, but giving evidences of thousands of years of survival, are suggestive masses of granite." Aquarius 5, "In the land of shades a grave council of the ancestors of a man of world importance has been called to guide him."]

Tim reads prepared remarks.

Discussion of policy change -- we are to draw on the events of the native's life as sources of insight into the horoscope.

Tim rereads his prepared remarks.

Anthony reads from psychological interpretation in Jones of Emerson's Moon degree.

Amy asks about Emerson's "guide" and possible connection to the fourth house.

Tim describes tenth house Moon manifesting in fourth house as Emerson's ability to assimilate into his own personality his impressions of qualities (e.g. self-discipline) in others; fourth house as intruder, here transformed.

Linda emphasizes the steadiness and continuity implied by the Moon symbol; points out the one-year-long interruption in 1858-9 as exception.

Anthony -- asks Andrew if any of this applies to previous discussions of the division that takes place in the realm of the parikalpa imagination of the unreality, the third level? The subject-object relationship is an ongoing process. The planet is located on a degree and projects both upward [sic; typist thinks 'inward'] and outward. This power has a subjective portion and an objective manifestation of that. Buddhists call this the imagination of unreality. But this is the development of the ego, no mean thing. The Buddhists ridicule this development.

Anthony reads positive and negative from 5° Leo (Jones).

Anthony reads positive and negative from 5° Aquarius (Jones).

Anthony: If you will notice, the latter is an objective manifestation of a subjective function. And it is no minor thing in the development of an individual towards Bodhisattvahood to say that the degree is power toward [Note: Jones says "power through"] absolute self-integrity. (Tirade against Buddhist obscurantism.)

Anthony points out the efficacy of the imagination exemplified in PB's Meditation on Sleep. [Note: See Paul Brunton, The Wisdom of the Overself, Chapter 14, "A Meditation on Sleep".]

Anthony: Language is like a reflector or a depository for the activity of the imagination -- all degrees of native's chart will be found in his writings.

Anthony: Moon symbol evidenced in Emerson's thought-taking [sic] over inner conflict about serving the Eucharist.

Tim reads from Emerson's journal written at that time in his life, July 1832, Uranus opposite the Moon. [Note: See Bliss Perry (Ed.), Ralph Waldo Emerson, The Heart of Emerson's Journals, pp. 58-59. Uranus was opposite Emerson's Moon in 1829, not 1832. Emerson gave up ministering in September of 1832 but Uranus was nowhere near his Moon at that time.]

Anthony asks for the Uranus degree (Linda obliges). [Libra 8, "In the depths of the woods is an abandoned farm; in the deserted house a fireplace blazes merrily and mysteriously."]

Emerson's resignation aspects.

Dickie reads a quote from Essay "Self-Reliance" on self-reliance and intellectual independence, and identifies it with the Moon.

Tenth house as Virtue, "where you're at" in the world.
