Vaibhashika

72 dharmas = vasanas underlying sensible universe.

Analyze perceivable world into constituents -- intellect in matter.

Side of vasanas -- combination of matter and form (taijas) = 12 ayatanas = basis of sensible universe.

(Yogacara interested in consciousness side of vasanas.)

Projected world from 12 ayatanas is skandha of perception.

Is acausal -- Vaibhashika is basically cosmological.

Sautrantika

Standpoint is within perception trying to explain its arisal.

Object is not directly known.

First moment -- 1) sense direct = consciousness immersed in matter, prana flowing through body.

Second moment -- 2) mental = image or astral world.

Third moment -- 3) self-knower = conceptual, apperceptive - reflective awareness of knowledge.

4) yogic perceiver -- identify with consciousness of Sun.

From 1 to 3 is a phylogenetic development.

1) Muladhara

2) Svadhisthana

3) Manipura

4) Heart -- experience of mentalism or taijasa consciousness

Common substratum for knowledge of four perceivers is Sun's taijasa consciousness -- all knowledge is within it and yogic perceiver knows it.

Sautrantika is basically concerned with the evolution of the generic mentality and how it has knowledge.

Yogacara

Is concerned with cosmology but from conscious side of vasana, and evolves vijnana system. Vijnana system is its main thrust.

Alaya, klisto, mano, five senses = eight consciousnesses.

Some schools of Yogacara use six consciousnesses (include alaya and klisto as part of mental consciousness).

Speak of different types of vasanas -- example: preserve identity of life stream; determines its content.

The sum total of all the consciousness intrinsic to each dharma = vijnanavada mind.
