Imagination

For an illustration we take the function of self-apperception or the senex, and try to see in a couple of examples how the self-apperceptive function which the individual is always operating with must be working according to the degree that the Saturn is sitting on and is further objectively manifesting a content according to the opposite degree. According to the Vedanta explanation the subtle mind goes out and grasps the intelligible, and then has to make a representation for itself of what it went out to -- of what the intelligible or reason-principle is like. In the first example we have Saturn at 6 degrees Libra, and the opposite 6 Aries. Can we see here how the 6 Libra with the Saturn represents the structure of the subtle mind grasping the Idea, and the opposite degree its concretization or outward representation?

Here the person cannot be satisfied with a purely abstract or idealistic understanding of himself, but must bring the understanding into a very concrete and practical application. There is a recognition of what constitutes him and his ideals only as this is substantiated -- in this person's case particularly through the science of Astrology, and its application to the human condition.

6 Aries -- A black square stands firmly, illumined red on one side.

In the opposite degree, we find that the way the inner self-apperceptive organization is objectively portrayed is that the "material reality" seen just in itself without the expression of the higher ideals or meanings being seen in it cannot be given any real power. But insofar as the sensible reality is truly revealing something of his higher ideals, or is seen to validate them, then it does take on the highest importance. If astrology can reveal the true or inner meaning of the world experience, then the experience can be seen to be meaningful, and not just a show. Insofar as "material reality" is an expression of inner intelligence, the person's experience will express his self-apperception, his view of his own ideals.

The senex or self-apperception represented by Saturn is being organized according to the degree it is on. This applies to every category, and taken in their totality the way we perceive the world is determined for us according to the way these categories are organized. We have to get a feeling of how just beyond the self-apperception which we operate with continually is the reason-principle which organized it and went into its constitution, which is a particle of light or intelligence seeking its own being. This structures the tropical matter of the Dragon in such a way that you must perceive the world as you do.

Take the elements of the earth -- the F, E, A, W [Fire, Earth, Air, Water] as the stuff being worked with. You breath in and out and the cosmic principle of Air is getting individualized by your breathing, and the air element will then contain the traces of your individual organism functioning. The same for the other elements -- which are thus seen to have a highly organized system of life traces. When this matter with traces is brought together by a superior (i.e. soul) function to form your body there will be a pre-existent organization of life traces in your body which the higher reason-principles will have to operate through. Both the higher and the lower will be present to some extent -- the matter organized to function in a self-apperceptive way, of a feeling way and so on, and the reason-principles working through these.

The way you perceive yourself in your experience is based in the way your senex is organized, (and) your self-apperception must conform to this. The way we experience self-apperception is already after the fact of the a priori categories that we have to try to get to, which are in their totality constituting the way you experience. Some a priori intelligence is organizing the whole trope system: THE ANIMA, HOW YOU FEEL IS ALREADY determined for you; how you think is already determined for you. The various aspects to the function may aid or obscure the way the reason-principle is going to unfold, but right in the very way the imagination is organized as our experience is a reflection of the prior principles.

Is this prior reason available to you in the embodied image? We would have to say yes if the thinking or reasoning actually becomes an organ of perception, the way the eyes are for physical perception. An organ of thinking to do this would mean that you have some access to the soul powers which are outside of the imaginative re-presentation.

If we correlate the chart symbolism to the cosmos, the 6 degrees of Libra, the reason-principle is part of the sidereal zodiac. We take Saturn as the function which is going to embody the reason principle and the elements FAWE [Fire Air Water Earth] as belonging to the planet Earth. The Saturn, which is a true knowing organizes, together with the other functions, the reason-principles and inserts them into the FEAW, this is constitutive of your psychosomatic organism. Then these organizing principles will reappear within the imagery, in the reproductive imagination, which you now call the circumstances of your experience, or the house. The Saturn is organizing the FEAW into an organism according to the intelligence of the 6 degrees Libra. The idea is thus included in the substance of your organism, organizes how it will function and then will reappear in the world projected as your experience.

In our diagram of the cosmos, the inerratic, planetary, and elements are all part of the productive functioning and organization, all of which combine to produce the primal image, with you as an empirical person within it. In this person are reflected all the primal structures, and within his experience and the circumstances represented by the houses, is a representation of the reason-principles. If you could develop an organ of reason, you could get beyond the representation to the meanings and intelligence operating concomitantly with it. This world is the real world in this sense -- with all the metaphysical principles within it. The discussion of the metaphysics without the world is only an abstraction.
