NOTES FROM SEMINAR, THURS., MARCH 31, 1982 (FAIRLY COMPLETE) ON YOGA, ASPECTS.

The five vrittis refer to the formation of concept. They are: right knowledge, wrong knowledge, imagination, sleep and memory (included under this are thinking and concentration). Under right knowledge are the three pramanas. [Note 1: 'Parinamas' crossed out and 'pramanas' written above it. Note 2 from JF: Pramanas, as kinds of valid knowledge, is correct here.]

There are seven unconscious willing powers, the seven unmanifested characteristics of mind. A possible correlation of these is:

Saturn -- nirodha, stoppage

Jupiter -- dharma (merit/demerit)

Mars -- shakti

Venus -- cesta (movement of the senses -- picks out what thing you'll do in the sense world)

Mercury -- transformation of parinama [Note from JF: 'Parinama' means transformation, thus correct here.]

Moon -- samskara

Sun -- jivana -- vitality

The six Chaldeans manifesting meaning inherent in the Sun's degree is that Sun becoming self-reflectively aware. The Sun in the planetary scheme (categories of the imagination) is not self-reflectively aware. [Note: Not clear from the context whether the reference is to natal or transiting Sun. If to transiting Sun, then categories of imagination is incorrect. See WG Classes 1983 0316, 0321, 0402 for more on this topic.]

The realm of the trans-Saturnians is the 'Witness-I', and organizes the World-Idea to create the ego or empirical subject. The 'Witness-I' can insert itself into the empirical subject and think that it is the empirical subject. The 'Witness-I' (undivided mind) is the perceiver of the empirical subject and his world.

The three parinamas Uranus Neptune Pluto are right knowledge, and provide the link between the categories of the imagination and the five conative vrittis.

The regular aspects (conjunction sextile square trine opposition) are modifications that are taking place, and the mind transforming the representations it receives from instant-to-instant is fabricative.

Perhaps there are two sets of aspects:

a) for the World Image,

b) for the entrance of knowledge into the individual.

According to Tim, the Quintile is more artistic, more individualistic, knowledge coming from within the ego. The Septile is more impersonal, knowledge coming from outside.

Correspondences:

Septile -- 360° or the trans-Saturnians relating the ideas in the 360°

Quintile -- system of belief, rational soul

Twelve aspects -- within the imaginal essence, the tropes

When the Septile is operative, it is indicative of the higher knower in us.

Quintile -- Concerning the 5, 5 would be the fifth point of the pyramid with respect to the four psychological functions. It is also the basis of the golden ratio.

Septile -- The meaning of the 7 is that it is unbegotten and unbegetting. A seven-sided polygon cannot be geometrically constructed. It is the outward-facing hypostasis, or power of the One. In this sense it seems the Septile is beyond the limits of the rational soul.

Try to see how Quintiles and Septiles were involved in major events of Gandhi's life.

Septile -- More on 7: The Seventh Idea is the outward-facing hypostasis. It is closest to the power to know (trans-Saturnians), and has to stop the divisive functioning (of the Chaldeans).

The correlation of Saturn to nirodha is interesting, perhaps it can be correlated with the Septile.

No matter how the trans-Saturnians are related to each other, it terms of aspects, they have to produce a unified World-Idea. The Septile is making available that unified World-Idea. The World-Idea is produced instant-to-instant. In between the instants is where the Septile is functioning. The 7 getting between the thoughts is not constructible, because no thought is being constructed.

The Quintile is constructible, but beyond the imagination, because it is not tied to the tropes.

Centered in the Witness position, both the particle and wave positions are available. Inside the categories, they are split into either particle or wave (or subject/object).
