TESLA AND THE AC TURBINE

Astrology class of 4/25/83

Nikola Tesla was born July 9, 1856. [Note: Most public sources have Tesla as being born at midnight July 10th. Prodigal Genius, a book about Tesla's life by his close friend John J. O'Neill, says he was born at the stroke of midnight. This is the date/time used for the appended natal chart.] He was a brilliant and prolific inventor of electrical devices. In addition to the AC turbine which we will concentrate on in this class, he invented neon lights and primitive robots, conceived of a way to store electricity in the ground, used wireless, and invented many other inventions, most of which did not get used. The public thought he was crazy and gave interest or credence to very few of his inventions. He was brilliant; he remembered all the books, formulas, and poems that he had read. He did not use objects for his experiments; he would make a mental construct and run an experiment or build an invention in his mind prior to doing it in the lab. Indeed, when the actual machine once made would break down, he would check back on the mental model in his mind to learn what the problem was. Tesla worked on many experiments at once; the ideas came to him so fast that he would select from amongst them the most fruitful to work on. Tesla, a hard worker who liked to work alone, slept just two hours a night. He was impractical and had difficulty getting money for his work; he would often forget to patent inventions.

We will look at Tesla's chart and the transits for the idea of the AC turbine to try to determine astrologically from whence and how an idea gets transmitted to the empirical subject.

Event: the idea for the AC turbine

The AC turbine allowed alternating electrical current to be generated. Before this invention, DC or direct current was used; with DC current, voltage decreases geometrically with distance and therefore a power plant is needed every few miles. AC/Alternating current overcomes the voltage drop that characterizes DC current. The DC motor has one input line going into the motor and there are metal brushes touching the armature in the motor. In the AC turbine, Tesla created a magnetic field around the armature in the turbine so that there was nothing actually touching the armature.

The electron theory helps explain why the AC turbine overcame the resistance that the DC had. In DC, the electron that starts at one end of the wire has to go all the way to the other end, i.e., the electricity has to be spread out. But in AC, the electrons alternate giving a transmission of momentum along the line; nothing actually has to be transmitted. AC jiggles the electrons -- one jiggles the next, jiggles the next, etc. It's like the gismo with a bunch of steel balls hanging down from strings; if you hit one end, the ball at the other end hits. If you imagine a huge long wire and you hit an electron at one end, the electron at the other end of the twenty mile wire will jiggle. Whereas with DC, one electron would have to go all the way through the wire, like the same messenger going from one end to the other. One can think of AC and DC possibly in wave and particle analogies. From one viewpoint, DC is like one particle being transmitted along the line whereas AC is more like a wave pattern and doesn't get dissipated. From another viewpoint however, DC seems wavelike in being continuous whereas in the AC there are breaks/alternations -- making AC seem particle-like.

The exact date of the intuition of the idea is unknown though it occurred in approximately Feb. 1882. Tim selected Feb. 15 1882 for the following reasons: 1) Transiting Mercury was stationary, semi-sextile natal Jupiter for the entire month, and on 2/14, transiting Mercury turned around; often when a planet goes stationary, something crystallizes in the understanding. 2) In addition, on 2/14, transiting Mars was conjunct natal Mercury. (This is the only "brief" aspect for 2/15/1882 that would not have applied to the rest of the month.) [Note 1, from typist: Mercury was not stationary for an entire month, nor was it semi-sextile his Jupiter the entire month, unless you do a 10 degree orb for semi-sextile. His Jupiter is 9 Aries. Mercury went from 29 Aquarius at the beginning of the month all the way back to that same position by the end of the month. It was semi-sextile his Jupiter for half a month at best. It sat at 10 Pisces for six days. Three days into that in went retrograde, namely on Feb. 12, not Feb. 14. Also, Mars didn't conjunct his Mercury exact until the 15th, not the 14th, and stayed there for six days. During this time and for several months prior, Tesla had been sick. He had greatly increased sensitivity: a fly landing sounded like a huge thud; he could hear a watch ticking three rooms away; a distant train whistle would upset him; people speaking to him sounded like thunder.

We will look at transiting quintiles to try to get a lead into the nature of the quintile.

TRANSITING URANUS (18 Virgo) quintile NATAL SATURN (6 Cancer)

This degree might make one very sensitive to potentialities in a situation and it might also have a physical effect. Regarding the "true rational divination," Tesla was able to solve a problem through a rational intuition on what to do experimentation. This is the reverse of Edison who got an idea through trial and error in the lab. Uranus also governs electricity and computers.

Individuality flourishes whenever it is able to establish its personal rights over some desirable segment of reality, and thereupon justify its own being by fulfilling the expectation of others. The keyword is METICULOUSNESS. When positive, the degree is high intelligence and skill in enlisting the potentials of experience for the service of self, and when negative, unnecessary concern over everyday security."

The transiting aspect between these two degrees might have related Tesla's inventiveness to the world. Although the natal chart and life shows much inventiveness, many of Tesla's inventions were not picked up by the public. Even with this idea, he had difficulty getting people to believe this experiment and had to wait fifteen years before there was a large-scale demonstration of it. But with this transit of Uranus quintile Saturn, Tesla was thinking in a way that conformed to an objective sense of what was needed.

Is the idea of the AC turbine found in the ideas embodying [Typist thinks: embodied in] the ego structure, i.e., the psychosomatic is a miniature cosmos and the idea of the AC turbine can be found in the way the psychosomatic is organized -- or is the idea coming from the trans-Saturnians?

The Uranus quintile Saturn was the mindset necessary for Tesla to receive the inner illumination -- to pick out the hypothesis and idea that was necessary.

There is a model/paradigm of every invention in the subtle realm or in the very nature of how we are constituted. Take, for example, the wireless radio; the paradigm in the subtle realm is telepathy in which two human beings can communicate when separated by vast distances. The point is that if man is a microcosm that duplicates the macrocosm, then all the laws of Nature have to be in the microcosm.

With Uranus in the first house, Tesla had a strong tendency to identify with the sort of intelligence on which the functioning of the cosmos is based and it is that which is brought and applied to the specifics of a problem. Mercury is secondary, only providing the means of making that knowledge available reflectively to himself and others.

The point is that if man is a microcosm and he duplicates the macrocosm, then all the laws of Nature have to be in the microcosm. So where does he get the insight to see the functioning of the laws in the microcosm?

Although our knowledge of occult physiology is not sufficient, it seems that there are electro-magnetic fields especially around the brain area and these magnetic fields don't need contact.

Earlier in the month of February 1882, transiting Saturn conjuncts Tesla's Pluto before septiling natal Mercury. With transits of Uranus quintile Saturn, Pluto semi-sextile Mercury and Saturn septile Mercury, and the one degree natal aspect of Saturn sextile Pluto, each of these planets aspects the other at this time. Mercury can be connected with electricity and Saturn can recognize [inaudible] as Saturn is natally semi-sextile Pluto. Could the natal Pluto degree (6 Taurus) represent the AC turbine? The symbol refers to a gap:

Does the natal quintile, Pluto quintile the Sun, indicate a tendency to be able to work with the level of the idea that Pluto is on, i.e., the idea of the Pluto degree is potentially available to the ego if the transits come by. The idea of Pluto is one part of the World-Idea that Tesla's ego has an understanding of or needs to assimilate; the idea that is potentially there through the Pluto must come through the ego.

Pluto on the ascendant may indicate a scientist. Pluto in Taurus would indicate obsession with body. The obsession is to try to understand the subtle forces or laws that underlie that body or any body.

The model of the AC current in the subtle body is the transmission of that instantaneous pulsating energy of the subtle body picked up by the chakra system like an induction into a chakra. Tesla's obsession and basic identification is not only with body (Pluto in Taurus in the first house) but also with this degree -- the cantilevered bridge representing a gap or transmission. With Saturn septile Mercury, Tesla will become self-reflectively aware of the deeper function and with Mercury in Gemini in the third house, he will formulate the idea in scientific concepts.

These interpretations may be confirmed by a quotation from an unpublished article, "Man's Greatest Achievement," written by Tesla:

John O'Neill [Prodigal Genius, pp. 251-252]: ""Long ago he (man) recognized that all perceptible matter comes from a primary substance, or a tenuity beyond conception, filling all space, the Akasa or luminiferous ether, which is acted upon by the life giving Prana or creative force, calling into existence, in never ending cycles, all things and phenomena. The primary substance, thrown into infinitesimal whirls of prodigious velocity, becomes gross matter; the force subsiding, the motion ceases and matter disappears, reverting to the primary substance.

"Can Man control this grandest, most awe-inspiring of all processes in Nature? Can he harness her inexhaustible energies to perform all their functions at his bidding, more still cause them to operate simply by the force of his will?

"If he could do this, he would have powers almost unlimited and supernatural. At his command, with but a slight effort on his part, old worlds would disappear and new ones of his planning would spring into being. He could fix, solidify and preserve the ethereal shapes of his imaginings, the fleeting visions of his dreams. He could express all the creations of his mind on any scale, in forms concrete and imperishable. He could alter the size of this planet, control its seasons, guide it along any path he might choose through the depths of the Universe. He could cause planets to collide and produce his suns and stars, his heat and light. He could originate and develop life in all its infinite forms.

"To create and to annihilate material substance, cause it to aggregate in forms according to his desire, would be the supreme manifestation of the power of Man's mind, his most complete triumph over the physical world, his crowning achievement, which would place him besides his Creator, make him fulfill his ultimate destiny.""

Although this quotation and other aspects of Tesla's life suggest that he was mystical, he denied it at least partly because of his poor standing with the scientific community. He did say that he thought there was life on other planets but not in a form that we could understand. It seems that Tesla wanted to control Nature/matter and the form it is found in his imagination. This may have been represented by the natal Pluto-Sun quintile.

The Sun in the fourth house is imagination and Tesla felt the power of Pluto shaping his imagination. The Pluto quintile Sun allows for the transmission from one level of existence to another. Tesla was able to incarnate into his own imagination the subtle forces of a prior level. The quintile is an aspect of genius and what is genius but a touching of an order above the normal functioning. Tesla was capable, through his imagination (the Sun), of receiving the power of Pluto.

NATAL SUN (18 Cancer)

There are always high rewards for any effort which is self-consistent or industrious at base, and by the reverse implication of the symbolism it is always possible for human creativity to endow its own manifestations with a gift of self-continuousness. Normality is exalted in the simple business of self-being. The keyword is PROVISION. When positive, the degree is a marked capacity for meeting every demand of existence advantageously and with a persisting self- fulfillment, and when negative, idle bustle and unprofitable labor."

The Sun is the central life purpose of the individual, the actual imaginal essence, the core which holds its purpose; embodied in that purpose for Tesla is the recognition of beneficent Nature as it is embodied in a creature, a creature within the environment of its own world. Pluto quintile the Sun is transmitting the subtler knowledge of the Pluto degree to the Sun, the central purpose; this aspect reinforces the understanding of the subtle laws of Nature. Pluto is actually transmitting knowledge to and getting incorporated into the central purpose.

The peculiarity of the quintile is that it can transparently reflect that and self-reflectively reveal it whereas another aspect may manifest it but not provide experiential contact of that level as a revelatory experience.

We will look at transiting Uranus quintile natal Saturn to feel/understand the mindset necessary for Tesla to grasp the idea within him; this mindset is a prerequisite to transmit the transiting septile aspects to the psychosomatic/regular aspects. The Uranus degree (18 Virgo) seems like a sensitivity to the World-Idea -- in this case to the subtle laws of the World-Idea. The degree is being embodied for a while in the Saturn which is being lifted out of its normal ego position to take the point of view of the rational soul. We have said that the imagination in the natal chart is being empowered by this higher realm; the subtler point of view is available.

Psychologically, Tesla's Saturn or self-apperceptive function is able to take advantage of anything that is available -- outlandish bits of information laying around -- and put together an idea. Tesla's self-apperceptive function was not exclusive or selective. With this transit, Tesla is shown the purpose of all his self-apperception. All these bits of information in the senex are going to be threaded together by this quintile transit -- and will show the Saturn's purpose. This was the rational set of mind, the condition the mind had to be in to receive the illumination coming from above it.

In other words, natal Saturn has been collecting thoughts and ideas for fifteen years about this problem but it doesn't have the right order built into it -- just the data in bits and pieces. Uranus quintile Saturn gave an order to all those bits of information which provided the mind with the necessary organization through which it could intuit what the (?) septiles (?) were trying to give him.

If we look at the septile aspects, we can investigate the theory that the combination of all the ideas/degrees of the transiting septiles will represent the idea of the AC turbine.

TRANSITING MARS (28 Gemini) septile NATAL PLUTO (6 Taurus)

(Although the North Node is septile the Sun and Moon, we are not sure of their significance in this investigation so will disregard them for now.)

In the symbols of the transiting planets making septiles to the natal chart, there is no indication of an AC turbine. These degrees are more concerned with the illuminating quality of the higher mind -- the way it is particularizing itself. All the qualities of the higher mind represented in these degrees are combined in some way, and then the quintile aspect transmits this and it is applied to the other transiting aspects.

We are now quite sure that the idea of the AC turbine is resident in the psychosomatic organism -- in the natal chart symbols. Indeed, Tesla worked on the idea for fifteen years, not just during the time of these transits. The actual potentiality seems to be in the natal degrees with the transits bringing in some kind of illumination. The regular aspects pull out/make available some idea that is already in the ego structure or in the natal Uranus, Neptune, or Pluto, which represents the potential idea that the ego is going to work with. The regular aspects are the form or content of that illumination. The illumination will work on the contents and try to show what is in the content.

The natal chart represents the matrix of possibilities in this man's karmic continuum; the tendencies inherent in his psychosomatic organism from his past are presented now for him to understand from the higher illuminating mind. From the point of view of all the man's past experience in the sense world, with this illumination he sees the correspondences of his natal chart to the higher realm. So if we look in the content of the natal chart -- the natal degrees, we may find the ideas that he will work with.

The theory we were testing was that the idea of the AC turbine would be found in the Idea in the starry spheres represented by the transiting planets, but we're not going to find it there. The idea must be in the natal Chaldean symbols. Everything is in the natal structure of personality -- the ego with all its possibilities, karma, etc. -- and this is what the higher mind is going to illuminate. Through the intermediary of the rational soul (transiting quintiles), the transiting septiles illuminate the idea/content that is in the natal chart. If the idea were in the transiting septiles, we would also have to postulate that we have enough intelligence in the psychosomatic to understand it there and that is presumptuous.

The rational soul makes an image of the World-Idea and that image is then communicated drop by drop (or however one wants to conceive it). Then everything in the ? World-Idea ? can be understood in the psychosomatic organism because the psychosomatic is a miniature cosmos; any law/power/force in the ? World-Idea ? will be represented in the psychosomatic in miniature. There is mahakundalini in the World-Idea and an individual kundalini in the psychosomatic and the individual is the only one we can understand. We must get acquainted with occult physiology in order to understand what the ideas may be in their original form.

We should clarify terminology. When we speak of the ideas in an ego, we are not really speaking of ideas but about the form (better word than content) that the idea is going to manifest in in the ego. The ego gives a form to the idea which comes out as content but the idea itself is formless and the ego cannot grasp something formless. Anything not already represented in the ego will pass through and won't be able to be apprehended.

Very simply, we're saying that all the laws involved in the embodiment/manifestation of any psychosomatic organism are in that organism, but within that organism they can't be understood. It takes the higher mind to illuminate how those reason-principles are embodied in the organism.

As in Plotinus [one word illegible] the ego does this activity for the purposes of contemplation; i.e., whatever act the ego does is ultimately done so that the higher can contemplate those ideas. [Note: See Plotinus, III.8.] It is not for the purposes of action. When there is an aspect from the higher (e.g. septile), it makes available that knowledge which it had been accumulating -- or now it is seen in the light of contemplation -- or in the light of the Ideas.

The ego specifies what the higher mind can illuminate. The ego is an embodiment of all these principles ? reason-principles or natal chart ?. This form, the psychosomatic organism, embodies all the laws and ideas but the ego cannot know through its own resources what the reason-principles are that it is embodying. It would take a higher mind to illuminate the rational soul and the rational soul to perceive its product and how it has embodied itself. This takes us back to Kant who says that the first act of synthesis is unreflective. The transcendental imagination isn't self-aware of what it is doing. It becomes self-aware of what it is doing through the reproductive or empirical imagination.

We must be identified with the rational soul in order to understand our ego structure because the rational soul is the knower in us. But the rational soul is represented in the empirical subject too. To say "I am the knower" refers at one and the same time to two distinct knowers: 1) the rational soul that really knows this, and 2) the rational soul identified with a vehicle through which it is operating. One has to be both at the same time: "I am the apperceptive transcendental ego and the empirical subject."

The rational soul as now being referred to is not locatable in the natal chart. Vulgarly put, to know what the mind is going to do tomorrow, one must look at his aspects for tomorrow and identify more with the aspects than with "who" the aspects are going to happen to. Which aspects to identify with to be the rational soul -- all the transits or just the septiles and quintiles, is a question that has yet to be worked out.

With this theory, we now have two frameworks to explain the higher knower illuminating whatever idea or content is in the ego. This new framework is a transiting aspect framework -- the three levels being 1) septiles as higher knower or illuminator, 2) quintiles as rational soul and 3) the other "regular" aspects as the ego. The other framework which we formulated in the past has the three levels as 1) trans-Saturnians as higher knower or illuminator, 2) transiting Chaldeans as rational soul and 3) natal planets as the ego. To avoid confusion, we will not discuss further the previously formulated framework at this time.

This new formulation says that the septiles represent the illumination of the idea, the regular aspects represent the modification of the ego or the way in which the form is being wrought to represent that idea or illumination, and the person that one really is, is the quintile. The quintile is the position of the undivided mind/rational soul and the position one should take.

But if we consider Tesla's chart and the one quintile (transiting Uranus quintile natal Saturn) occurring for the AC turbine event, are we saying that the rational soul/undivided mind is just that one transit as opposed to being all the transits as has been suggested in other formulations?

No, we are not speaking of the rational soul being just the transiting quintile aspects. The quintile aspect refers to the transmission of knowledge. In order to have an open line, there must be a quintile. We are not saying that the rational soul is not the other transiting aspects; we are saying that if the higher mind is going to illuminate the ego, there has to be an opening to that ego and the quintile is that opening.

But couldn't a transiting trans-Saturnian aspecting a natal planet, Uranus trine Sun for example, provide the opening for the illumination of the idea by the higher mind? It is doubtful. For example, when Carl Jung wrote the Septem Sermon he had 16 "regular" transiting aspects including Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto transits, but he had not [sic] transiting quintile or septile aspects [FIGURE 1983 0425-4]. The Septem Sermon is considered quackery that belongs to the annals of mediumship; it is automatic writing. It all came from within the psychosomatic organism -- all the images from within the Dragon. This is not knowledge. Even Jung himself would not include the Septem Sermon in his Collected Works. Although it may be possible that other aspects, such as squares, etc., do mean something in the rational (along with the quintiles) in providing the opening for the transmission, we suspect that the transiting regular aspects refer to the modifications of the sublunary elements.

A further observation about Tesla's transits for the AC turbine event: Few of the planets linked up in transits are linked in the natal chart's aspects. The only transiting combination in the sky that is also linked in the natal chart is Neptune and Venus. All the other combinations were a unique configuration.
