-- Part of Fortune [POF] 10° Scorpio [Note: This POF assumes that Jung's ascendant is 28 Capricorn. See FIGURE 1982 0329-4, Carl Jung Natal Chart (WG version), appended to this transcript.] -- "A fellowship supper is served to a group of men brought together in reunion to live again in forgotten moments." We are attempting to understand Jung's chart with Jupiter sitting on his POF. Synchronicity is working.

-- For Sun, Moon, Saturn, see previous class.

-- Sun square Neptune -- makes no other close aspects; this square was prominent throughout his life.

Mercury 14° Cancer -- sixth house -- ruler and exaltation by house -- "A very old man, whose feebleness adds strangely to his dignity, stands alone facing a vast dark space to the northeast."

-- Jones: symbol of fearlessness and self-perpetuating strength that arises from knowledge; a joy in the problems that lie ahead. Negatively, untutored juggling with values… Past experiences are the strength of human spirit to face his destiny. Positively, effective enlistment of deeper elements of life for some momentary end. Negatively, lack of purpose and chaos in the understanding.

-- Sixth house situations include clinical, patient-analyst relationships. With Mercury there, Jung was able to get good intuitions about what processes were going on. Fabricative Mercury [Note: Mercury in Cancer, non-dignity, i.e., a fabricative planet], these processes were gradually built up within him. He allowed the patient's psyche to unfold itself, to speak to his own unconscious and let it unfold. He didn't have a preconceived notion as to where he was going. He was led by circumstances.

-- When Neptune hit his Mercury, a fellow colleague committed suicide and he was struck by the realization that he was not protected from these unconscious forces. He had a real breakdown then, which lasted throughout the time Neptune sat on his descendant, 1913-1916.

-- The symbol indicates a ripe soul for initiation -- the beginning of the process of thinking, the journey through loneliness; cosmic NE [Northeast] represents the orientation of the soul. North is the direction, Northeast, the deviation; this is the beginning of the mystical journey.

In the Saturn degree also we see that the man was his own thinker. He relied on his own inner processes. Through Mercury he investigated the psychic world.

(NOTE: When you read the symbol, Do Not bring in your concepts. Do not think of them as symbols but as images. An image has a totality and absolute presence. You cannot dissect it when you look at it. You must FEEL it; it won't tolerate conceptualization. The meaning of the symbol in chart A will be very different from the meaning of that same symbol in chart B. There is a presence of the person in each chart and symbol. (See diagram in the back of Harding's The I and the Not-I.) [Note: See FIGURE 1982 0329-2. See also reference to Harding diagram in AB notes appended to this transcript.] When we understand what ideas are being worked with, we will see how the materiality of the body is coming out with the images one is going to work with.)

-- The Sun symbol, the man gazing at the moose head, indicates the possibility of overcoming the instinctual materiality. [Leo 4, "An elderly man in evening clothes, of poised and military bearing, stands alone before a lovely mounted moose head."] It is not clear that Jung accomplished this.

Venus 18° Cancer -- fall by house -- "On all sides is the bustle of the barnyard, and in its old-fashioned and natural life a hen clucks among her chicks."

-- Jones: practical approach to the conventional life; uplifting of the simple joys of life. Positively, a concern over things; negatively, a reaction against things; unprofitable labor.

-- Jung's strengths in discernment were really at the level of biological natural existence. In that realm he was like a hen among chicks, the desire to nurture the psychological world of others was very strong. As with Mercury, this work was guided by sixth house circumstances. The exalted Moon is sextile his Venus, Mercury. He dealt primarily with the ethics and morals of Western man.

Mars 22° Sagittarius -- "A perfect bit of the old world is found in the new; a Chinese laundry has its shutters up and is now itself."

-- Jones: the reality of the interior world; self-refinement through unaccepted and unexpected activities; development of specialized interests; concentration on goals with remote rewards; a gift for maintaining poise in alien situations. Negatively, unnecessary acceptance of self-inferiority.

-- Mars is very strong in the chart; king of the chart. Mars aspects practically everything else in the chart. It is SD [stationary direct], and progressed into Capricorn.

-- The symbol indicates a strong inner containment in the face of all circumstances. The thrust of Jung's life was to bring an ancient Western point of view into operation in the modern world. He was an old European with ancient ideas; he brought these ideas into the mainstream of modernity.

(NOTE: We want to go backwards through the chart to get to the principal idea. The only way you'll get to that is through the feeling. You can't analyze piece by piece. It's best to keep the mind blank and just listen to the image. The Mars points to the work he had to do, and transits showed how it progressed. The planets represent the activity that will manifest the ideas as their life. The life will be that idea working its way out. Later on we will see which part of the life is manifesting that idea, i.e., emotional, physical, etc.)

Progressed Mercury trine Mars, Neptune trine Jupiter, Saturn -- experience with séances, bread knife exploding. Because both Saturn and Jupiter are in interceptions, the likelihood of that kind of telekinetic force being released was very big. The progressed Mercury trine Mars indicated a new idea was surfacing.

Uranus conjunct Mercury [sic; Mars] -- Jung went to Paris, met Janet, watched hysterical women in a coliseum.

Pluto opposite Mars -- met Freud; broke with Freud when progressed Mars moved into Capricorn.

Jupiter 24° Libra -- "A marvelously colored and figured butterfly is spread before the eyes; on its left side is an extra and third wing."

-- Jones: evolution of new forms; instinctive expansion of being; idealistic [partial reads: artistic] originality; high facility for guiding analysis.

-- Jupiter possibly gave him the access to the archetypes, the ability to feel his way around in the unconscious realm.

-- Jupiter and Tail intercepted in the eighth house -- mediumship; hidden personal life; Septem Sermones was not included in his collected works because he knew it wasn't his. [Note: See Septem Sermones ad Mortuos (The Seven Sermons to the Dead) in Jung's Memories, Dreams, Reflections (1962), Appendix V, or in The Red Book: Liber Novus, ed. Sonu Shamdasani (New York: Norton, 2009).] At that time he had: Sun Mercury Neptune conjunct Sun [sic; Sun Head Uranus Mercury conjunct Saturn], Jupiter conjunct Neptune [sic; Jupiter semi-sextile Neptune], Neptune conjunct Sun, Venus Pluto sextile Neptune, Saturn square Jupiter, progressed Mars trine Neptune [FIGURE 1982 0329-5].

Neptune 4° Taurus -- "The rainbow's pot of gold is revealed in the midst of a shower of sparkling and flashing colors."

-- Jones: rewards guaranteed between the universal and individual.

-- Blake: "If a man persists in his folly he becomes wise." [Note: William Blake, The Marriage of Heaven and Hell, Proverbs of Hell, Line 18: "If the fool would persist in his folly he would become wise."] The rainbow is an intractable gossamer thread of hope which must be followed to the end; when you get there you find the pot of gold. It is transcendental.

-- Neptune and Jupiter combined, represent an intuition of the Self. Neptune is the Goddess of reason. For Jung, the formulation of the Self was in terms of the collective unconscious.

-- Progressed Mars made the exact trine with Neptune when he wrote Septem Sermones. The writing of these sermons marked the end of a three year breakdown, a stage of utter chaos in his life. One day, he got up and a wind blew through the house tossing everything about. The doorbell rang, the electricity blew out. He knew then it was over; the unconscious broke in; he wrote the sermons. But with the tension created by the opposition of Saturn and Sun, the life was kept rational. It was impossible for mediumship to take over.

Uranus 15° Leo -- "The great American carnival, the Mardi Gras at New Orleans, is seen with a wealth of floats, decorations and merriment."

-- Jones: colorful dramatization of life by which man knows all reality; exaggeration of human weakness; public display of achievement. Positively, exaltation of self; negatively, self- indulgence, unconvincing claims.

-- The Mardi Gras is a celebration of the "beast" before the onset of Lent. Man comes to know all reality through life. He learns how all the animals live inside himself. Reality becomes available through the animal life, i.e., all the reason-principles buried in the flesh. Jung lived life very intensely. The old man in the Sun symbol is also celebrating those reason-principles in the flesh. (The moose is a very large animal.) The moose head is the trophy of that realization; the expression of "I" in the seventh house. The pot of gold in the Neptune symbol signifies the goal of exalting those reason-principles.

Pluto 24° Taurus -- third house -- on the nadir -- finger of God to Mars and Jupiter, square Saturn -- "A mounted Indian brave rides proudly with human scalps as trophies at his belt."

-- The symbol demonstrates the power Jung had working through him. Taurus also signifies power. There is a transpersonal power shooting right through the personality, at nadir through his thinking. Jung's thinking denied the purely conceptual and academic ideas of his time. (scalps on his belt) The Indians believed that the Soul of a man departed through the top of the head, and could thus be placated by the shaman upon the attainment of the scalp.

-- Pluto never progressed out of the natal degree.

-- Pluto conjunct Mercury -- 1925 -- traveled to Egypt; vision of gazelles; realization of the re-creation in man's power of reflection.

-- Pluto conjunct Venus -- began studying alchemy…1928

-- Pluto conjunct Sun -- cut off from all contacts; war; felt himself to be sickly and old and unsuccessful.

1944 -- heart attack; vision of the Earth
